Technology Education Center

The Technology Education Center at the YWCA Greater Harrisburg offers a series of computers classes for YWCA residents and community members.

At this time, on a monthly basis, we offer basic keyboarding and typing, Introduction to Windows XP, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. On occasion we offer Microsoft PowerPoint.

Introduction to Windows XP:

This six-hour course introduces participants to the basics of Windows and the operating system XP.

Students will learn how to navigate in Windows, create and save documents, create folders and more.

Topics include:

  • Turning PC on, logging on as different users, restart, stand by, shut down
  • Explanation of operating systems and the difference between application software and OS
  • Six basic functions of the mouse
  • Desktop and icons
  • Task bar and its functions
  • The contents of the start menu
  • Difference between PC search and Internet search
  • Computer drives
  • Internal and external storage devices (save on floppy disk also)
  • Moving up and down levels of the hierarchy, back and forward buttons
  • Difference between grayed out functions and accessible functions
  • Parts of the window
  • Title bar, menu bar, tool bar
  • Minimize, maximize, restore down, close (from both corners)
  • Moving, sizing and cascading windows, opening multiple windows
  • Views such as icons, thumbnails, etc.
  • Finding, turning on and moving toolbars

Microsoft Word 2000

This 12-hour course introduces participants to the basics of word processing and Microsoft Word 2000. Microsoft Word is the word processing software used in most offices across the world and allows the creation of professional-looking documents including letters, reports, newsletters, posters, faxes, resumes, memos and more.

Topics include:

  • Using the menus
  • Using and customizing toolbars
  • Learning and using keyboard shortcuts
  • Using Help
  • Importing & exporting other document formats
  • Using document templates
  • Creating, saving and opening documents
  • Applying text formatting - fonts, bolding, underlining, italicizing, color, shadows, etc.
  • Applying paragraph formatting - justification (left, right, center, complete)
  • Inserting and sizing clip-art
  • Creating headers and footers
  • Applying bullets and numbers
  • Applying page and text borders
  • Creating word art
  • Drawing and coloring lines and shapes
  • Inserting page numbers
  • Using the spellchecker and grammar checker
  • Using auto text and autocorrect
  • Using printer features

Prerequisites: Basic keyboard and mouse familiarity and successful completion of Introduction to Personal Computers and Microsoft Windows. This class is designed for participants with little or no word processing experience. Experienced word processing users seeking to gain a better understanding of Word tips and shortcuts are also welcome.

Microsoft Excel 2000

This 12-hour course introduces participants to the basics of electronic spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel 2000.Excel is the spreadsheet software used in most offices across the world and allows the creation of financial reports, address lists, inventories, charts, and other types of worksheets that perform complex data analysis using formulas and functions.

  • Using the menus 
  • Using and customizing toolbars 
  • Learning and using keyboard shortcuts
  • Using Help
  • Creating, saving, and opening workbooks
  • Using worksheet templates
  • Naming, inserting, deleting and moving worksheets
  • Applying cell formatting - numbers, alignment, fonts, borders
  • Creating charts
  • Creating headers and footers
  • Creating formulas
  • Using functions
  • Using auto fill
  • Creating custom lists
  • Using printer features
  • Inserting, deleting, moving and sizing columns and rows
  • Copying, pasting, deleting and moving formulas
  • Inserting comments, pictures, hyperlinks
  • Understanding absolute and relative formulas
  • Subtracting dates
  • Sorting data
  • Filtering data
  • Printing worksheets

Prerequisites: Basic keyboard familiarity and successful completion of Introduction to Personal Computers and Microsoft Windows plus knowledge of Microsoft Word is helpful. This class is designed for participants with little or no spreadsheet experience. Experienced spreadsheet users seeking to gain a better understanding of Excel tips and shortcuts are also welcome.
