In Honor of Black History Month, the YWCA is pleased to present a special book launch & lecture featuring local author, Marian Cannon Dornell, whose book of poetry entitled “Unicorn in Captivity” is being published on February 7.

Dornell provides a historical perspective on slavery and segregation in Harrisburg, as well as the lasting legacy on our lives today. Dornell shares her own stories of growing up in the 1940’s and 1950’s in Harrisburg, a town that considered her “other”.  She also brings to life the stories of men and women who were enslaved in our city, as well as those of individuals who were allies in securing their freedom.

Through masterful weaving of poetry, stories and narrative, Dornell provides us with a rare glimpse into the history of race in Harrisburg. She does not stop there, however.  She connects our past with our present, speaking to the issues of race and racism today. She challenges us to further our own understanding of the “other,” and to continue the dialogue on race and racism in our city.

We hope you will join us for this thought-provoking presentation on February 11 in the Highmark Room.  Light refreshments will be available at 5:00 PM, and the program will start at 5:30 PM. In case of bad weather, the snow date is Wednesday, February 24.  If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Amanda Arbour at AArbour@ywcahbg.org or 717-234-7931 x3057.

Please consider supporting Marian by purchasing her book! If you would like to pre-order “Unicorn in Captivity,” you can do so here from Finishing Line Press. The more books that Marian sells, the more she can receive in order to donate to local public schools and other organizations to continue her goal of education and dialogue on race.
